Hawthorn Center Construction

Due to construction at the Hawthorn Center, we are bringing back Friday night Shabbat at home with host homes. hat means, we will need volunteers to host Shabbat at home on February 8th and 22nd. If you can host either of these services, please contact Heather Zimmerman at 321-698-1412 for details.

With uncertain weather, if Howard County cancels evening activities, we ask you not to travel to the host home and instead celebrate Shabbat at your own home.

Please note that Saturday Shabbat Services during February will be held in the Watermark Clubroom, 10001 Windstream Drive,  Columbia, 21044.

Youth Activities

Religious School News

Watch our BCRS students in action last Sunday:

This past Sunday, we continued our discussion about Achrayut (responsibility). We looked at one quote from the Torah (“Love your neighbor as you love yourself”) and a rabbinic text from Rabbi Hillel (“What is hateful to you, do not do unto others.”). It was really special when Morah Heather’s class was heard saying, “If you want to be responsible, you cannot be a bystander!”
Morah Jeanne’s class has started a weekly Hebrew Hotshots activity. As part of our regular Hebrew language curriculum, students will have the chance to read 2-6 sentences each week, and see how much they can translate. Everyone who attempts the hotshot challenge will be cheered for; and the weekly winners will be mentioned in this update, as well as on our Facebook picture page.

This week’s Hebrew Hotshots are:

Sam B. and Jonah! Yasher koach!

**Bet Chaverim has established a number of ways for Congregants and other supporters to commemorate life cycle events, or to honor or memorialize individuals important to their lives. Donors can choose to allocate their donations to Bet Chaverim's:

  • General Fund for operating expenses
  • Chesed Fund to provide shiva trays for bereaved members of our Congregation
  • Melissa B. Gorelik Youth Fund that supports activities for children and adolescents.
  • BC Religious School, which provides Jewish education, and is currently running a moderate deficit.

Additionally, we recently introduced the new Eitz Hayim Chumash; for $72 (quadruple Chai), Donors can dedicate a book through the:

  • Chumash Fund that will be inscribed with a customized bookplate at the front of the Chumash.

Donations can be sent to Bet Chaverim's post office box, but please remember to include the fund you've selected, as well as the tribute reason (e.g., in honor of X; in memory of X) for your donation [and for Chumashim, the inscription you'd like to have on the bookplate(s)].

Help Kugel Connection Provide Food For Jewish Neighbors in Need

Imagine the stress knowing you have to choose between buying food or medicine this month because you only have enough money for one….This is a scary reality for 1 out of 9 Marylanders  who have to make this choice EVERY MONTH.  Kugel Connection is a non-profit organization that is working to eliminate this awful decision for  Howard County Jewish residents.   Chances are you may know one our clients.  They may be that nice person you see at Synagogue, or the friendly face you see at the grocery store.  Jewish senior citizens in our community need our help.

During the months of November and December, Kugel Connection is launching a fundraiser.  Its goal is to raise $5,000.00, which will enable Kugel Connection to continue to deliver monthly food to current clients and to increase the number of clients it can help during 2019.

For just a small and generous donation of a DOUBLE CHAI ($36.00), Kugel Connection will continue to help our Jewish neighbors.  Please donate today by going to or sending a check to Kugel Connection, P.O. Box 531, Highland, MD 20777. If you are interested in doing a double Mitzvah by donating the food and delivering it, please contact Cheryl Kaufman at
